Does the categories section of the Edit Post form function similar to hashtags?

Is it possible to follow hashtags?

Can I connect with someone on Friendica? I know that I can send them DM but that's not enough.

How to Follow Someone

Yes, you can connect with someone on Friendica. If you see their post or DM, click on their avatar, and then click on Connect.

If you don't have a post in front of you, then you can go to connections, click on the Add button and then enter their address (username@example.com), and you can follow them.

Does the categories section of the Edit Post form function similar to hashtags?

This is used to organize your posts on your channel into categories. It creates links in the sidebar of your channel for each category. This is only visible to people who view your channel. You can think of it as a way of organizing your own posts for later reference, except that people who view your channel can also see these categories.

These categories do not get sent to your followers though. You would use hashtags in the body of the post if you want your followers to see it on their platform. This is because most other platforms support hashtags, not categories.

So they are similar, but different.

Although you can't follow a hashtag, you can search for a hashtag. The only difference is that you won't get notifications.
